White House Historical Association / "School Programs"
Free Field Trip Program for Grades 4-6 at the Decatur House on Lafayette Square, Washington D.C.
WHHA: "Paths To Freedom" ... It is January 1st, 1863. You are Abraham Lincoln and the United States is in the midst of the Civil War. You have decided to sign the Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves living in the Confederate states ...

Relive this scenario during the Paths to Freedom field trip program while students recreate the events surrounding the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This fully costumed reenactment is videotaped and transferred to a DVD for the class to keep.

This field trip experience, a partnership between the White House Historical Association and The Decatur House on Lafayette Square, a National Trust Historic Site, invites students to explore notions of bondage and freedom within the real historic spaces of the Decatur House.

This program is:

• Standards-based
• Free of charge
