"The
president-elect entered Washington quietly in a borrowed carriage
on February 11, 1829, having spent the night before in Rockville,
Maryland." This description of Andrew Jacksons arrival
in the Capitol City reflects a time before trains and planes.
Choose four presidents who served at least forty years apart.
Conduct research to determine by what means they traveled to Washington.
Using The Presidents House by William Seale, and
specific biographies as sources, collect as many details as possible
about each presidents experience. Make a poster illustrating
with drawings or photographic copies the differences in travel
time, travel technology, and travel conditions for each. Report
your findings to the class, using the poster as a visual aid.
For discussion:
How do you think the changes you discovered in the travel of
these four presidents-elect from their homes to Washington are
related to the provisions of the Twentieth Amendment?
