The
stable of the White House, Harpers Weekly,
April 17, 1869.
Stables were an important part of early White House
life. First located several blocks from the Executive
Mansion, they were shifted around until the creation
of greenhouses forced their removal in 1869 from
the west colonnade to the area southwest of the
Presidents Grounds.
