The Polks on the South Portico

The Polks on the South Portico

A gathering on the South Portico of the White House, about 1848. That most modern couple, James and Sarah Polk, are front center. The turbaned head to the president’s left is that of the by-then-legendary Dolley Madison, who had returned, an old, faced camellia from the past, to perform again on the stage of her glory.
