President George Washington Bookmark

The story of the White House begins with the story of the first president of the United States, George Washington. Known as "the father of his country," General Washington commanded the Continental Army and led the American armies to victory over the British during the American Revolutionary War. He then served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Although he selected the location and oversaw the design and building of the White House, the building was not finished during his presidency and he was the only president never to live in the house. President's Washington's image, including the portrait that inspired this bookmark, is displayed prominently throughout the house today.
