I. Description of Collections
WHITE HOUSE COLLECTION
The White House is the official residence of the president of the United States and a living historic house containing a collection of museum quality objects. This collection of fine and decorative arts encompasses both historic objects associated with the White House and the presidency, and significant works by a variety of American and European artists and craftsmen, generally consonant with the historic character of the house. The Curator of the White House manages the care and preservation for the collections.

The White House Historical Association acts as steward to the White House Collection. The Association maintains a file of images of two-and three-dimensional works of art, as well as of decorative objects and furnishing. Many of these images have been featured in WHHA publications.
Rights Information: WHHA licenses the images of paintings of the White House Art Collection. We reserve the right to provide access to these images.
WHHA owns copyright to the images of objects, furniture and three-dimensional artwork in the White House Collection. We reserve the right to provide access to these images.
II. Description of Uses
PUBLICATION
Express permission from the White House Historical Association is required for use of all images that will be published or printed. Fees for commercial and non-profit uses are listed below. Each request is reviewed and permission is granted or denied on a case- by- case basis. If permission is granted, the user will be required to agree to our Terms of Use statement.
We allow the following published uses:
- exhibits
- educational website (low-resolution images only)
- online exhibits (low-resolution images only)
- educational publication (for sale, or not for sale)
- educational broadcasts
We do not allow the following uses:
- any use which may lead to unauthorized use
- advertisements or endorsements
- redistribution of image as prints, posters, slides, or other commercial products.
- Internet distribution
- Electronic compilations
- use of high-resolution images on websites
PERSONAL USE
The White House Historical Association allows the use of our images, without use fees for personal uses that do not entail publication. User will be required to sign a Terms of Use agreement.
We consider the following to be personal use:
Illustration for school projects or papers, including theses or dissertations
Electronic slideshows using presentation software such as PowerPoint
Illustration on personal desktop
Display in home or private office
In the classroom
III. Terms of Use
By downloading image files from the White House Historical Association site, purchasing prints, or receiving images files from WHHA through any other means, you are bound to: 1) WHHA terms of use, 2) The written permission notice you will receive:
TERMS OF USE FOR PUBLISHED IMAGES
Images may be used only after express permission from WHHA has been granted for each specific use.
No image license is valid until receipt of payment.
Permission is given for one-time, non-exclusive, non-transferable use only.
“One-time use” means that once a digital image has been published, distributed or exhibited, you many not subsequently reformat, redesign, or otherwise alter the way the images is displayed; nor may you re-use the image in other products, nor allow others to use it. For each additional use after image is obtained, WHHA must be contacted for permission.
Image will be credited according to the credit line provide by the WHHA. Credit line must appear alongside image, or in section devoted to image or illustration credits.
Image is not to be cropped, superimposed with text, or altered in any way. WHHA will accept formats for review and may allow cropping on case- by- case basis. If WHHA does allow cropping of image after review, image must be credited as a "detail."
TERMS OF USE FOR PERSONAL USE
Images may be used for personal use only.
Image may not be published in any way, including website or electronic use, without the express permission of the White House Historical Association.
Image may not be used in an electronic compilation or distributed in any way.

IV. Ordering Instructions
The White House Historical Association requires requests for images and approval through your Lightbox, or by written request to the contact below.
The following information is required:
Image identification
Description of how the image will be used
Anticipated date of publication
Name, address, phone, and fax number of contact person
Payment must be received before permission to download and/or publish an image is granted. You may pay by credit card by calling in your information, or mail a check or money order to the address below.
