Inauguration Site
Early inaugurations in Washington were held inside the U.S. Capitol. Since 1829, with four exceptions for inclement weather or ill health, they have been staged on outdoor platforms erected at the Capitol to enable the public to witness the event.
When presidents have died in office, their vice presidents have taken the oath of office in a variety of places – four in Washington, D.C., and four in other states.
