FEATURE : President Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln White House on whitehousehistory.org
graphic detail

As historian William Seale points out, Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, “about a month before Thomas Jefferson surrendered the keys to the White House to James Madison.” When Lincoln and his family moved into the White House a half-century later, “the nation Jefferson and Madison had helped create was falling apart.” Personal and public tragedies and triumphs followed. The White House Historical Association invites you to learn more about Lincoln’s White House in this bicentennial year.
