Description: Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of John Quincy Adams reflects the serious character of the sixth President of the United States. Adams made a lasting contribution to the grounds of the White House, using his love of gardening to fill the lawns with a variety of American plants, flowers, and trees. The President often helped cultivate the White House seed-beds in the mornings and planted an elm that stood on the south grounds until 1991.
