graphic detail

Title: Photograph of Abigail Powers Fillmore

Description: As a schoolteacher, Abigail Powers Fillmore loved to study and to read. She met Millard Fillmore when both were attending school, and continued teaching after their marriage. Once at the White House she requested money from Congress to change the second floor oval room into a library. Congress provided $2,000 to build curving bookcases to fit the oval-shaped room and buy books of all sorts. The selection included Shakespeare, biographies, travel guides, novels, and law books.
