Picturing the President's House: ULYSSES S. GRANT

graphic detail

Title: Oil Portrait of Ulysses S. Grant

Description: By the time Ulysses S. Grant became president, the White House was more than just the president’s residence: it had become an important historic site in the minds of Americans. Thinking the White House outdated and too small, many proposed during the Grant administration the building of a new president’s house in a different location. President Grant, who loved the house and its history, did not allow the plans to go forth.
