Picturing the President's House : BENJAMIN HARRISON

graphic detail

Title: Oil Portrait of Caroline Scott Harrison

Description: Because her children and grandchildren lived in the White House, Caroline Scott Harrison drew up plans to enlarge the residence, but Congress never approved them. While cleaning out the attic, Mrs. Harrison discovered boxes of old china, which she cleaned, restored, and used to establish the White House China Collection. Mrs. Harrison loved art, set up her own studio, and held china painting classes for Washington women in the White House. Just two weeks before the 1892 presidential election, Mrs. Harrison died of tuberculosis. Her funeral service was held in the East Room.

Date: 1894
