Picturing the President's House: RUTHERFORD B. HAYES

graphic detail

Title: Photograph of President and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes

Description: President and Mrs. Hayes decided not to serve wine or liquor at their dinners. Instead, they took their guests to the White House Conservatory for after dinner conversation. The couple enjoyed gardening and worked on enhancing the White House grounds. In 1879, the Easter Egg Roll moved from the U. S. Capitol to the White House lawn, a tradition still enjoyed today.
