Title: The Blue Room, Andrew Johnson administration

Description: President Johnson’s daughter Martha Johnson Patterson decorated the Blue Room in geometrical patterns. Mrs. Patterson was the White House hostess because Mrs. Johnson’s poor health made her unable to carry out hosting duties. The room had blue wallpaper with black and gold borders, velvet carpets, and furniture from the Buchanan Administration. Presidents traditionally stood in the Blue Room to receive guests during White House receptions.
