graphic detail

Title: Photograph of Mary Todd Lincoln

Description: Mrs. Lincoln’s time in the White House was characterized by sorrow and trial. She was criticized by the public, who thought her redecoration of the White House costly during a time of war. The White house held two funerals during the Lincolns’ stay, the first was for their son Willie, who died in 1862, and the second was for the president, who was assassinated in 1865. Both funerals were in the East Room.
