Picturing the President's House: JAMES MADISON

graphic detail

Title: The South Front of the President's House

Description: When the Madisons returned to the White House they found it gutted by fire with only the damaged walls remaining. President Madison insisted that the rebuilding process follow the original plans for the house, approved by George Washington. He hired James Hoban, the original architect of the White House, to rebuild the house. This pen and ink drawing shows the South Front of the restored White House.
