Title: Oil Portrait of William McKinley

Description: President William McKinley greatly expanded the power of the presidency and drew up plans to enlarge the White House. Such plans were never realized. On September 6, 1901 Leon R. Czolgosz assassinated the President shortly after his re-election. The president and first lady were in Buffalo, New York at the Pan-American Exposition. The President’s body was taken to the White House to lie in state in the East Room.
