Title: Oil Portrait of James Monroe

Description: Samuel F. B. Morse was first hired to paint President Monroe for the city of Charleston, South Carolina. When the Monroe family saw the Charleston portrait they liked it so much that they had him paint another, which is the image here. President Monroe is sixty-one years old in this portrait, and appears as the confident leader of a time described as the “era of good feeling.”
