graphic detail

Title: Oil Portrait of Franklin Pierce

Description: Renovations were done of the interior and exterior of the White House during the Pierce administration. Rooms were redecorated, a hot-water heating system was installed, a second floor bathroom was added with running hot and cold water, the ceilings were painted colorfully by local artists, and a greenhouse was built in 1853 to supply the White House with fresh flowers. The White House today has a tradition of always displaying fresh cut flowers in its rooms and at its dinners and parties.
