Description: Because her eleven-year old son Benny died in a train accident two months before the inauguration of President Pierce, Mrs. Pierce did not attend social functions at the White House for a year. After the mourning period was over, Mrs. Pierce entertained in a quiet fashion, never able to recover from the death of her child.
