Title: Oil Portrait of John Tyler

Description: John Tyler became president after the sudden death of President William Henry Harrison. A divided Congress made his presidency difficult. Tyler’s first wife, Letitia, managed the White House from her upstairs room because a crippling stroke had confined her to a chair. Her daughter-in-law Pricilla Cooper Tyler served as hostess.

Date: 1841
