Picturing the President's House: JOHN TYLER

graphic detail

Title: The President's House from the River

Description: One can see the Tiber Creek to the south of the White House in this view. The swamp by the creek was considered poisonous in the summer months, and most Presidents took long summer vacations away from Washington for fear of getting sick. While in office, President Tyler made few changes to the White House. He found Van Buren’s complete redecoration, only a few years before, satisfactory.

Date: c.1841
