graphic detail

Title: Oil Portrait of Martin Van Buren

Description: President Van Buren is painted here with long sideburns, wavy hair, and a polite expression. He was known to have expensive tastes. The president’s salary was $25,000 a year, a substantial sum; however, the president was responsible for paying for the cost of running the White House (food, parties, and servants), and that took almost the whole amount.

Date: c. 1830-40

Creator: Alexander Francis
