Picturing the President's House : GEORGE WASHINGTON

graphic detail

Title: Oil portrait of George Washington

Description: This oil portrait of George Washington shows a serious Washington surrounded by symbols of leadership. Washington stands grasping a sword in one hand, a reminder of the Revolutionary War and the President’s role as Commander and Chief. He gestures towards the viewer with the other hand, a reminder that the new nation was governed “by the people”. Notice the volume of the Constitution and Laws of the United States under the table. The United States government purchased this painting in 1800 for $800.00, and it hangs in the East Room of the President’s House. First Lady Dolley Madison saved the portrait from destruction by the British during the War of 1812.

Date: 1797
