Title: Washington's Armchair

Description: President Washington purchased this gray and white painted armchair from a French diplomat. The purchase included twelve such armchairs and was made at Washington’s personal expense to replace worn out and broken furniture in the Executive Mansion. Washington lived in New York City at the time, the first national capital under the United States Constitution.
