white house art > "petalesharro (c. 1822)" by charles bird king, 1785-1862
The federal government commissioned Charles Bird King to paint the pictures of many of the Indians who visited Washington in the early 19th century. King painted from life the leaders of at least 20 tribes. Many of them, like Petalesharro, met with the president at the White House.
