The Senior Director of Principal Gifts is responsible for developing organizational and individual prospect strategies that will lead to philanthropic investments of $1M or more in the White House Historical Association. Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Senior Director will lead a team that includes the Coordinator of Development Research and contract fundraisers. The Senior Director will work closely with the Vice President of Development, the Associate Vice President of Development, and President of the Association, serving as the primary driver for internal processes and external moves that will ensure a consistent and deliberate focus on those individuals whose philanthropy will have the most significant impact on the Association.

Internal processes for which the Senior Director of Principal Gifts will be responsible include the convening of strategy meetings for prospects rated $1M or more (in gift capacity) with gift officers and other staff integral to the advancement of these relationships.

Fundraising and Portfolio Management:

  • Collaborates with development colleagues to expand the community of philanthropic leadership that supports the work of the White House Historical Association, managing a portfolio of major and leadership gift donors and working to develop a pipeline of new donors.
  • Manages a portfolio of between 75 and 100 principal and major gift prospects, cultivating and soliciting these individuals.
  • Submits 3-5 principal and/or major gift proposals per quarter and makes approximately 100 visits per year.
  • Closes annually $2 million to $5 million per year in new gift commitments personally.
  • As required, staffs the President and other leaders as well as key volunteer leaders during prospect visits.
  • Imagines and orchestrates other fundraising activities involving the Association’s major gift team designed to engage and cultivate prospective donors.

Type of Experience:

Successful major gift (front-line) fundraising experience; at least three years of experience leading a team of development professionals and working with top-level organizational leadership and volunteers.

Experience Preferred

Five or more years fundraising experience at a national charity or university; experience working on a significant fundraising campaign within a complex institution; experience as a regional fundraising officer.
