The funeral train carrying President Roosevelt’s body from Georgia to Washington, then on to Hyde Park, New York, did not feature any black drapery, unlike Harding’s simplified decorations which included black and white fabric adorning the engine and the car where his body lay.

He asked for short services “of the utmost simplicity” in the East Room and Capitol Rotunda, that they be attended only by close friends and family and a select few high-ranking members of the government, and, especially, “that there be no lying in state anywhere.” The document was only discovered in Roosevelt’s White House bedroom safe after he was interred. The funeral that took place, pared down as it was, would have been a little extravagant for President Roosevelt’s tastes.
