The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington D.C. - Photo 4

This sketch depicts the original First Baptist Church located at the corner of I and Nineteenth Streets N.W. When the church moved to Tenth Street in 1834, many of First Baptist’s African American members chose to remain at the original church. In 1839, the Nineteenth Street Church became the First Colored Baptist Church, the first Black Baptist Church in Washington D.C.
