Edith Roosevelt's Colonial Garden

This black and white photograph is of the colonial garden on the west side of the White House grounds during the administration of Theodore Roosevelt. Unlike the modern Rose Garden, which is currently situated in the space, this layout mimicked the geometric patterns often found in estates like Mount Vernon. The garden was designed by then-first lady Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and White House gardener Henry Pfister.
