Lucy Hayes

Lucy Webb Hayes took a special interest in the history of the nation and the White House. She lobbied Congress to fund an official portrait of Martha Washington, which now hangs in the East Room, and worked to complete the collection of presidential portraits begun during President James Buchanan's tenure in office. Educated at Wesleyan Female College, Mrs. Hayes led an active public life. She spoke against slavery and visited schools, prisons, and asylums with her husband during his political career.
