Mahogany Armchair, Monroe Administration East Room

Mahogany Armchair, Monroe Administration East Room

These chairs are from a suite of 24 chairs and four sofas made for the East Room by William King, Jr. of Georgetown for the Monroe family. This suite may have been inspired by French furniture placed in the Oval Room in 1817. It remained in the East Room until removed by President Ulysses Grant in 1873.
