Dr. James Ewell of Washington found an observation point from which to watch the fire, arriving just in time to see the fire begin to shoot from the windows and rise far above the house, “with a ‘voice like thunder’ . . . that ‘saddened the night with gloom.’” A scared window hood stripped of white paint in the 1980s, looks much as it did after the British departed and the sandstone walls began to cool.
