President Lincoln, in a conservative black suit, looks careworn from the stress of war in this photograph. However, his gaze is firm and direct attesting to his unwavering commitment to preserving the union of the United States of America. In his Gettysburg address he declared, "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
