Belle Hagner’s memoirs include several stories about the White House visits of portrait artists who painted the Roosevelt family. She wrote of a sitting President Roosevelt did for the Hungarian artist, Philip de Laszlo, and described the portrait as “a splendid likeness and a fine picture artistically.” Five official copies were made of the portrait by Charles Skipworth (c. 1905), including the copy above, now in the author’s collection.
