President Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant was a cadet in the U.S. Military Academy from 1839 to 1843. He entered the army after his graduation and served until 1869. In March 1864 President Lincoln named Grant lieutenant general and commander of the Union Army. The Civil War ended just over a year later with the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. Some of his signature victories came at Fort Donelson, the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg.
