A south view of the White House after the renovation was complete masks the fact that little of the original interior remained. Visitors remarked that the newly renovated house had lost some of the haphazard charm from 150 years of presidential occupation. President Truman also decided to build a balcony on the South Portico, accessible from the second floor oval room and the president's bedroom. It was the first major change to the outside of the White House since Jackson added the north portico in 1830.
