The Roosevelts tour the Panama Canal cut

President Roosevelt’s ultimate goal for his tradition-breaking presidential journey outside of U.S. borders was to observe every aspect of work on the canal. He traveled slowly by train, observing the work, greeting crowds with Mrs. Roosevelt (seen protected from mosquitoes by a veil of netting, gloves, and long sleeves). He toured the Culebra Cut and examined the huge steam shovels at work making the cut.
