Theodore Roosevelt on Horseback

Theodore Roosevelt volunteered to fight in the Spanish American War, resigning his position as assistant secretary of the Navy in order to command the 1st Volunteer Cavalry or “Rough Riders.” Roosevelt is best known for his “charge”—actually an advance on foot—up San Juan Hill during the war on July 1, 1898.
