Washington's Oath of Office Painting

This print shows George Washington taking the oath of office at Federal Hall in New York City on April 30, 1789. "Long live George Washington, President of the United States!" shouted the surrounding crowd. The federal government first resided in New York City until it moved to Philadelphia in 1790. Eventually it moved to the city of Washington in 1800.
