White House Draped in Mourning

Created in 1881.

The White House Draped in Mourning for President Garfield. Black fabric drapes the White House in 1881 to express a nation in mourning for James Garfield. At Mrs. Garfield's request, the president's funeral was held in the Capitol, not the White House.
