White House with Lombardy Poplars

White House with Lombardy Poplars

This sketch was made by Dr. William Thornton, the Architect of the Capitol, at the request of the Secretary of the Navy. Thornton drew the piece to illustrate how the grounds of the White House might be improved by planting Lombardy poplar trees. The face on the lower portion of the drawing may be a self-portrait of Thornton.
