The White House Historical Association is seeking a Store Manager for its Washington D.C. Gift Shop.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the retail store, demonstrating trustworthiness and attention to detail.
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff and customers, ensuring a customer centric environment where employees are knowledgeable about our mission and products.
  • Assist customers, organize merchandise, maintain in-store displays, and process payments.
  • Meet strategic category goals and sales targets by maximizing sales and controlling expenses.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Open and close the store, ensuring readiness for the next business day with attention to organization, cleanliness, and shelf stock levels.
  • Plans, identifies, communicates, and delegates appropriate responsibilities and practices to store employees to ensure smooth flow of operations
  • Demonstrates a calm exterior presence during periods of high volume or unusual events and manages smooth transitions thereafter to keep store operating to standard and to set an example for the store team
  • Ensures employees payroll is managed timely and with accuracy
  • Motivates and inspires employees to achieve business results by developing a high performing team.
  • Receive and manage inventory shipments, proactively addressing reorder needs to drive opportunities.
  • Process payments, conduct bank deposits, and manage daily invoices.
  • Communicate effectively with senior leadership to ensure the store has tools necessary to be successful.
  • Manage product knowledge and oversee staff training and development.
  • Maintain positive relationships with customers and ensure a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Provide feedback, coaching, and performance evaluations for staff.
  • Order office supplies, schedule meetings, and generate sales reports.

Desired Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in retail leadership, including staff supervision.
  • Business degree preferred or equivalent skills and work experience.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Knowledge of inventory stocking and control practices.
  • Knowledge of visual merchandising practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of POS and other automated systems that support retail operations.
  • Knowledge of security standards and procedures that support the physical and financial integrity of retail operations.
  • Familiarity with fund control procedures and practices for retail operations.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability to represent the White House Historical Association in a positive and professional manner.

The White House Historical Association is a nonprofit educational association founded in 1961 for the purpose of enhancing the understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the Executive Mansion. All proceeds from the sale of the Association’s books and products are used to fund the acquisition of historic furnishings and artwork for the permanent White House Collection, assist in the preservation of public rooms, and further its educational mission.
