Mary is a retired attorney, active farmer, and philanthropist. She attended Wellesley College and University of Chicago Law School and was the first woman to serve as the Principal Deputy Legal Advisor at the US Department of State. She also served as mayor of Montclair, New Jersey. She then won the Republican primary in New Jersey for the honor of challenging Bill Bradley for the US Senate seat.
