Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II first came to Washington D.C. as Princess Elizabeth in 1951 with his Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and stayed with President Harry Truman and his family at Blair House.
At the time extensive renovations were in progress to modernize the White House. Princess Elizabeth delighted President Truman and the American people. He remarked that "Margaret [Truman] tells me that whenever anyone becomes acquainted with you they immediately fall in love."
