Tad Lincoln Portrait

Created c. 1864.

Tad, the youngest child of President and Mrs. Lincoln, was seven when the White House became his home. He and his brother Willie had a pet goat, pulled the beards of callers, set up lemonade stands in the Entrance Hall, and joined their father while he worked. Eager to join in the military activities all around him, Tad wore a colonel's uniform after Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton gave him an honorary commission.
