First Lady Helen Taft's Luneta; White House History (Number 34) - Photo 3

This colorized photograph from about 1901 offers a sweeping view of the Luneta on Manila Bay. The lamps were first fitted with electric lights in 1895, near the end of the Spanish colonial era. In 1903, an American investor organized the Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company to build an electric tram in the city. Meralco, as it is still known by acronym to this day, is the largest utility company in the Philippines.
