The Unveiling of Eleanor Roosevelt's Portrait
This photograph by Joseph J. Scherschel was taken at the February 4, 1966 unveiling ceremony of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelts portrait. First Lady Lady Bird Johnson spoke at the event and actress Mary Fickett, who played Mrs. Roosevelt in the movie "Sunrise at Campobello," read excerpts from Roosevelt's autobiographical works to over 250 guests in the East Room of the White House. Mrs. Johnson spearheaded efforts to acquire the portrait and it was purchased by the White House Historical Association for the White House Collection. The portrait was painted by Douglas Chandor. Eleanor Roosevelt first sat for the portrait in Chandor's New York studio in 1949.
