Mrs. Nixon Leads the Wyeth Family on a Tour
In this photograph, taken by National Geographic photographer Joseph J. Scherschel on February 19, 1970, First Lady Pat Nixon invites painter Andrew Wyeth, his wife Betsy, his sons Nicholas and James, and his daughter-in-law Phyllis to examine art from the White House Collection in the first lady's bedroom. That same day, a 21-work exhibition of Wyeth's work premiered in the East Room of the White House, and President Richard M. Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon hosted a dinner in the State Dining Room in Wyeth's honor. This was the first time at the White House that a reception had been held for a single artist, as well as the first art exhibition featuring a sole living artists work.
