President Johnson's Chest of Drawers

Created c. 1865-1870.

After President Lincoln's death, the public roamed freely through the White House. They took china and silver as souvenirs, and cut pieces of fabric from furniture and curtains to take home. Congress allotted $135,000 to the Johnson Administration to redecorate and replace what was damaged and stolen in the house. Johnson purchased this chest of drawers with a full-length mirror and curved drawers in 1865. At that time full-length mirrors were the latest technological advancement.
